Local councillors could be given the power to ban the opening of new pubs in Blackpool as part of a curb on alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour.

The city council is seeking approval for a special policy of cumulative impact which will give them the power to block drinks licence applications.

The move comes after a police report revealed the area suffered more than 3,700 violent or anti-social incidents from May 2005 to May 2006.

The policy, which must undergo a 12-week consultation period before it gets the go ahead, follows similar schemes in London, Nottingham and Watford.
