Landlady told she does not know how to run a pub after 43 years!

A landlady who has been pulling pints for almost half a century has been told she has been demoted to a barmaid - after failing a multiple choice exam.

Daphne Cutten, 73, found out at the weekend that she has failed her pub licensing test despite having been the landlady of the Murrell Arms near Bognor for the past 43 years.

She and husband Mervyn have been loyally serving boozers at their pub since 1964.

But when when Mervyn died last October Daphne was told that she would have to travel 10 miles to Chichester to sit in an exam hall and answer more than 70 multiple choice questions about how to run a pub if she was to take over as the licence holder.

Daphne said: "It's crazy that I have to go through all this when I obviously know how to do my job after all this time.

"None of the locals can believe it - it's like something from the dark ages."

She said: "This all seems so unnecessary, I mean, I could run this place with my eyes closed.

"This is costing me money as well as a lot of bother.
