Get your staff smoking policy in place -NOW

Licensees were warned to be mindful of their responsibilities under the forthcoming smoking ban in England, an expert in employment law warned this week.

Michael Hurley, marketing consultant at Peninsula Business Services, said that under the demands of the new Health Act it was vital that those employing staff in pubs consider issues such as smoking breaks as well as their own recruitment policies.

"If you allow smoke breaks currently what are you going to do after the ban comes into effect on July 1? Will you allow them and if so, will non-smoking staff be allowed the same breaks?", he said.
